The "Free 5G SIM Upgrade" Identity Theft & Mule Account Trap

Published: May 6, 2026 | By Red Alert Intelligence Team

You might be walking through a local market or bus stand when a person representing a major telecom company approaches you. They offer to upgrade your old 4G SIM to 5G for free. Sometimes, they even offer you ₹500 to ₹1,000 in cash just to open a "Zero Balance" bank account to hit their corporate targets.

Do not give them your fingerprint or Aadhaar details. This is the front line of India's massive cybercrime network. You are being recruited as a "Money Mule."

How the Identity Theft Works

Cybercriminals who run massive operations like the "Digital Arrest" scam or "WhatsApp Task Frauds" cannot use their own bank accounts to receive stolen money. They need untraceable accounts.

They send agents into rural areas, colleges, or busy markets. These agents take your Aadhaar details and biometric fingerprint. Instead of just activating one SIM card for you, they secretly activate multiple SIM cards and open digital bank accounts in your name.

⚠️ The Consequence: You Take the Blame

The scammers sell the SIM cards and bank accounts linked to your name to international fraud syndicates for up to ₹25,000 each. When these syndicates scam someone out of lakhs of rupees, the money is deposited into the account bearing your name. When the police track the money, the trail leads straight to your doorstep.

How to Protect Yourself

Never allow anyone to scan your fingerprint on an unauthorized biometric device. If you are getting a new SIM card, always go to an official, registered telecom gallery, not a temporary roadside canopy. Keep your Aadhaar biometrics "Locked" using the official mAadhaar app when not in use.

Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)

How can I check if fake SIM cards are registered in my name?
The Government of India has a portal for this. Visit the official TAFCOP portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in), enter your mobile number, and it will show you a list of all SIM cards active under your Aadhaar. You can instantly report and block numbers you don't recognize.
Someone offered me ₹2,000 to "rent" my bank account. Is this safe?
Absolutely not. Renting out your bank account or UPI ID is illegal. You are acting as a "Money Mule." If stolen money passes through your account, you can be arrested as a co-conspirator in cyber terrorism or money laundering, even if you didn't commit the original scam.
What should I do if the police contact me about an account I didn't open?
Cooperate fully. Explain that your identity was stolen. File an FIR immediately for identity theft at your local cyber cell. Provide any details you can remember about where and when you recently gave your biometrics or Aadhaar copies.
